December 2023 to Present

As a Member of AmeriCorps VISTA, I committed to a year of full-time service through the Power of We Consortium at an Ingham County nonprofit.

About the Company

AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. AmeriCorps provides opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds to serve their country, address the nation’s most pressing challenges, and improve lives and communities.

AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program designed to alleviate poverty. President John F. Kennedy originated the idea for VISTA, which was founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, and incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993.

AmeriCorps VISTA members serve full-time for one year working with public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and tribal governments to fight poverty by supporting sustainable change in areas like climate, education, public health, and access to benefits. VISTA members mobilize local resources, build organizational capacity, and empower communities in development. This could include research, fundraising, curriculum development, volunteer recruitment, network building, and more.

About My Role As A Member:

Four core principles provide the framework of all AmeriCorps VISTA projects:

  • Ending Poverty: The project’s goal addresses helping individuals and communities move out of poverty, rather than making poverty more tolerable through short-term services.
  • Empowering Communities: The project engages residents of low-income communities in planning, development, and implementation of the project.
  • Building Capacity: Members strengthen, expand, and increase the reach of anti-poverty organizations and programs by working on projects with staff and volunteers, rather than directly with people in need.
  • Creating Sustainable Solutions: Members build capacity for organizations to address poverty long after the VISTA members are gone. VISTA members develop systems, relationships, and knowledge which they transfer to the organization and the community to sustain over the long-term.
