I’ve been so caught up in human stuff that I totally spaced on @bringingupbandit’s special day on Saturday. I actually remembered around 11PM that night, so that has to count for something, right?! 😅

Don’t worry, though, we still celebrated yesterday with extra treats, couch time, and belly rubs! 🎉🐾

Eating: My job paid for lunch at Kura Revolving Sushi Bar in Novi (@kurasushi_usa). I tried squid nigiri and warabimochi for the first time and although they weren't nasty, I wouldn't eat either of them again. We put down just under 80 plates between 11/12 people; we sure did #eatgood! #ilovesushi #foodie

HONORABLE MENTION: I tried @averiesunshine's Lemon Garlic Butter Salmon recipe with brown rice and broccoli on the side. #salmonmeplease #inthekitchenwithdesi

Playing: "Affirmations for the Grown Ass Woman" by Toni Jones (@iamtonijones) plays as I start my morning most days. I randomly came across her album on @spotify a while back and fell in love with all her music. #musiclover

Obsessing: Updating my personal and blog websites and working on my #personalbrand. I've made a lot of changes and finally feel like I got it right this time — check out desimslaughter.com and justdesi.blog!

Recommending: I don't spend much time on TikTok, but I did find my new fave there, the @drinkcirkul Cirkul Water Bottle. I've been practicing a water-drinking habit and this has really helped me cut back. I also got one for my 10-year-old nephew and he loves it too! #drinkcirkul

Treating: Mango Popping Boba Tea from Koala Tea & Bakery (@koala_bakery_cafe). A mango green tea with strawberry popping boba and I added coconut jellies. I got 2, which finished my punch card to get a free tea on my next visit! #iloveboba #bobatea

It’s #AmeriCorpsWeek and #AmeriCorps 30th anniversary! 🎉

Let’s give a big shoutout to all the amazing Americans out there, both past and future, who proudly wear the AmeriCorps 🅰️ and make our country a better place. For 30 years, AmeriCorps has been turning moments of impact into a full-blown national service movement. So, let’s celebrate this incredible milestone together! 🎉

As a current VISTA member, my service year started in December 2023 as the Women’s Economic Empowerment Outreach Coordinator for the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing (@lansingwomen) through The Power of We Consortium (#pwclansing). I was motivated to join AmeriCorps VISTA in my pursuit of meaningful career experiences that foster professional growth. In the 3 months since starting my service I have already learned so much and had some valuable experiences.

Yesterday, I was flown to Dallas for VISTA Member In-Service Training with 150 of my fellow VISTA members from around the country. This will be a highly interactive in-person networking and skill-building 2-day event where I can network and learn with other members. I’m excited to have this opportunity and the others that come along with my service commitment. I can’t wait to see what comes of this year!

Before I head to @lansing_shuffle to celebrate #51

Before I head to @lansing_shuffle to celebrate #517Day, I want to highlight what I love about Lansing.

Although Detroit is and will always be my first home, once I graduated high school, as was on my way to Michigan State University (@michiganstateu), there was no turning back; my room was gone the night before I left.

Leaving home at the age of 17 meant that Lansing (and East Lansing) raised me. Since making a home in Lansing, for the most part, this is where I've been. I randomly took off to Houston in 2017 from feeling trapped and stagnant, but things weren't clicking as quickly as I'd hoped there. At first, I wasn't planning on returning to Michigan, but being away made me realize that I needed to do some inner work to be happy wherever I was. I finally decided to head back in 2020, thinking Detroit was the spot, but unknown to me at the time, I ended up back in Lansing instead.

From my first roommate outside of my siblings, my first bar outing, and my first apartment to getting my license, my first big girl job, and many relationships, living in Lansing has given me too many memories to count. I #LoveLansing for many reasons, but mostly because being here has taught me so much and has been a catalyst in my coming-of-age story.

This is one of the two mugs I keep on my desk at work for my daily tea. (Check out my Hermoine #mashems that sits on my desk)

I remember when I was introduced to Harry Potter as a child. I was immediately obsessed!! The complex themes it explores and all of the magical wonders had me hooked. I’ve owned all of the books (at one point) and seen all of the movies. I deeply resonate with various traits, trials, and tribulations that the main characters display through the story.
