The Quiet Reality of Rebuilding

After years of trying to "figure it out," I realized something recently:

A lot of us are rebuilding quietly.

Quietly applying for jobs.
Quietly pivoting careers.
Quietly questioning ourselves.
Quietly trying to survive while also trying to become the person we imagined we'd be by now.

For too long, I've always felt like I needed to disappear until I had everything figured out.

A stable job.
A polished success story.
A clean narrative.
A happy ending.

It's like when all the stress hits, I completely shut down and have an ostrich moment of sticking my head in a hole until I feel it's safe to come out.

But life rarely works like that.

Finishing the Degree, Beginning a New Challenge

In May 2025, I walked across the stage at Michigan State University after returning to school more than a decade later to finish my bachelor's degree. I officially completed my program in August and earned my Bachelor of Arts degree after years of starts, stops, setbacks, responsibilities, growth, exhaustion, doubt, and rebuilding.

That moment meant everything to me.

But what nobody really prepares you for is what happens after the celebration ends.

I genuinely believed finishing my degree would unlock the next chapter of my life. I thought the combination of my experience, portfolio, entrepreneurial background, and education would finally create some stability and momentum.

Instead, life humbled me again.

Shortly after graduation, I lost my apartment and experienced homelessness in Lansing for three months before eventually relocating out of state. Since then, I've been applying for jobs across marketing, branding, communications, tech, education, hospitality, and related fields with very little traction despite having over 20 years of experience and a newly completed degree.

At least a hundred or more applications later...

No interviews.
No callbacks.
No clear answers.

And if I'm being honest, that experience can do something to your confidence if you let it.

Still, I've continued building.

Continuing to Build Anyway

Even on my worst days, I can't give up. I keep going, even against my will.

Since graduating, I've been surviving through delivery apps like DoorDash, Spark Driver, and GoPuff while continuing to apply, plan, and rebuild my life in real time. It's not glamorous, but it's honest.

And I know I'm not the only one navigating a season like this.

We're living in a strange professional era where people are more visible online than ever before while simultaneously struggling behind the scenes. We were told networking, degrees, personal branding, consistency, and visibility would open doors. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes they simply help you keep going long enough to find the right opportunity.

That's part of why I'm starting this series.

Why I'm Starting "Building While Becoming"

The phrase Building While Becoming isn't a unique concept, and I definitely can't take credit for it. In many ways, it's something people have been doing forever.

But the more I thought about this season of my life, the more those words felt fitting.

Right now, I'm building while becoming.

I'm building a career while becoming the next version of myself professionally.
I'm building stability while becoming more resilient.
I'm building new opportunities while becoming more comfortable with uncertainty.
I'm building a future while still figuring parts of it out as I go.

Building While Becoming is a personal declaration to myself to defeat perfectionism, overcome imposter syndrome, and stop waiting for the finished version of the story before sharing my story and allowing myself to be seen.

This isn't a "watch me become successful" story.

This is a documentation of building, learning, growing, and becoming in real time.

What You Can Expect From This Series

Think of this series as an ongoing record of what it looks like to build a life, career, and future while still becoming who you're meant to be. It's a space for me to share honest reflections, real-life experiences, observations, questions, wins, setbacks, experiments, and lessons learned along the way.

Some posts may be deeply personal. Others may focus on work, entrepreneurship, self-care, or what it means to grow through the in-between seasons of life.

Sometimes I'll share what I'm learning.
Sometimes I'll share what I'm struggling with.
And sometimes I'll simply document the journey as it unfolds.

I want to talk honestly about:

  • Rebuilding professionally
  • Navigating modern work culture
  • Branding and digital identity
  • Creativity and technology
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Community
  • Uncertainty
  • Ambition
  • Resilience
  • What it means to keep showing up for yourself during in-between seasons of life

How to Follow Along

You'll be able to follow my Building While Becoming series in a few places, depending on how you prefer to connect. Consider my blog home base, where longer reflections and stories will live, while shorter thoughts, updates, and conversations will be shared on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Wherever you choose to follow along, the goal remains the same: to document the process of building a life, career, and future while still becoming the person I'm meant to be.

A Reminder for Anyone Building While Becoming

If you've ever felt educated but stuck, ambitious but exhausted, visible but overlooked, or hopeful while quietly rebuilding pieces of your life behind the scenes, I hope this series reminds you (and me) that your current season does not erase your value.

Sometimes rebuilding is the work.
Sometimes becoming is the work.
And maybe there's power in allowing ourselves to be seen while we do it.

Welcome to Building While Becoming.

Let's talk in the comments!

Do you believe there's value in sharing the process, not just the outcome? Why or why not?
