If you know anything about me, you already know that I’ve always had an interest in digital media and content. Lately, with the progression of the digital era we are in, social media has hugely impacted how marketing dynamics have been changing across industries.

Since obtaining a position as a Content Marketer, I started searching for a related online program to help me brush up on the industry knowledge I’d previously gained to perform my best. In my search, I came across many online courses on digital marketing and was inevitably overwhelmed by the number of choices. Then, one day, I received an email about OneTen, the Blacks In Technology Foundation, and Udacity partnering to offer fully-funded scholarships to train and empower African-American community members in the tech industry

I’d previously researched Udacity nanodegree programs but had yet to pursue any actively. Upon completing the Information Technology Pathways program through Focus: HOPE, I applied for the High Tech Transition Pathway Scholarship, sponsored by GM, to take the Java Programming Nanodegree program. I didn’t receive that scholarship due to a scheduling conflict.

Why I Decided to Pursue the Scholarship

When I saw the email, I immediately opened the link to see the available program offerings. This program, specifically, allows students to enroll in one of the following fields:

On the one hand, being that I have a career goal of becoming a certified Front-End Web Developer, I was definitely interested in pursuing that program. On the other hand, since I was initially searching for a program to help me gain more comprehensive knowledge to support my new position, the Digital Marketing program was also an appealing option. In my usual spiral of indecisiveness and having an interest in multiple programs, I applied for both programs. After I had completed my application, I noticed that I was only allowed to apply for one program (rightfully so).

About the Program

The Digital Marketing Nanodegree program’s courseware covers every aspect of digital marketing in all specialized vertical areas, like marketing fundamentals, content strategy, social media marketing, and performance optimization using Google Analytics. The program consists of a 3 to 4-month, self-guided learning journey. Upon completion, students will continue to be a part of OneTen’s community and have access to more skills-building opportunities.

What I Hope to Gain

I am excited about this opportunity and can’t wait to see if I get the scholarship! Completing this program will help me do well in my current position and beyond. In addition to taking this program for employment-related reasons, I also hope that by taking this course, I will be able to apply the knowledge gained to grow my personal brand and businesses.
